Saint Andrew's Festival – Rah Island

Girl Fire Dancers

Preparation starts weeks before. The villagers get together to collect coconut leaves. They attach the leaves together to make up about a kilometre long fishing net. In the morning of the 28th of November, they watch the ocean tide, then the Chief picks up a corner of the leabves. The villagers then pick up the leaves to follow him.

More than 100 villagers carry the coconut leaves to trap fish. They bring the leaves in as the tide goes out and eventually, when the tide is low enough, they catch fish with bows and arrows or whatever they can use. Men, women, children and visitors can join in the fishing.

There are other attractions including a Volcano Bake on the 29th. Women assemble all the crops in the shape of a volcano to bake overnight.

On Saint Andrew’s Day on November 30, there is an Anglican church service combined with a custom dance. Other festivities include a Demonstration of the Missionary’s arrival, Man’s custom dance, woman’s custom dance, and a big lunch feast. Then the party goes on…
